Quick Answer
Using your MassHealth dental coverage takes four steps. First, check which MassHealth coverage type you have, since benefits differ between them. Second, confirm which dental services that type actually covers. Third, find a dentist enrolled with MassHealth who is currently taking new patients. Fourth, verify your benefits, any prior authorization requirements, and your remaining yearly limit before treatment starts, rather than after the bill arrives.
Step 1: Check Your MassHealth Dental Coverage
Start here, because every later answer depends on it. MassHealth is not one plan but several coverage types, and your dental benefit follows the type you are enrolled in rather than the MassHealth name on your card.
MassHealth Standard, CommonHealth, Family Assistance, and CarePlus all include a dental benefit, with the details set by program rules, your age, and eligibility. MassHealth Limited is different and is the one most often misunderstood. It is a separate eligibility category for people who meet the income rules but not the immigration status requirements for full coverage, and it pays for emergency services only. Having Limited does not mean your dental benefit was cut. It means you are in a category built around emergencies.
To find your type, check your card and approval letters, call MassHealth Dental Customer Service at 1-866-616-2699, or ask a dental office to verify it. Our MassHealth dental coverage information page covers what each type generally includes.
Step 2: Understand What MassHealth Covers for Dental Care
For eligible members, and subject to medical necessity and program rules, MassHealth commonly covers:
- Dental exams, X-rays, cleanings, and fluoride, including silver diamine fluoride
- Fillings and crowns
- Root canal treatment, with an exception for third molars
- Extractions, oral surgery, and anesthesia where clinically appropriate
- Deep cleaning for diagnosed gum disease
- Full dentures, partial dentures, and denture repairs
Coverage for members under 21 is broader and adds sealants, space maintainers, and medically necessary orthodontics. Several adult services, including crowns, dentures, and deep cleanings, require prior authorization: your dentist submits the plan and MassHealth reviews it before treatment goes ahead. A covered service is not an automatically approved one.
Step 3: Find a Dentist Who Accepts MassHealth
A provider has to be enrolled with MassHealth for your visit to be covered, and not every practice is. The MassHealth provider directory and the customer service line at 1-866-616-2699 both cover the whole state.
Then call and ask two separate questions, because they have different answers. Is the practice enrolled with MassHealth? And is it currently accepting new MassHealth patients? An office can be enrolled and still have closed its books.

You are also welcome to contact Smiley Dental Fairhaven directly to ask about current MassHealth participation and appointment availability, and to check our new-patient appointment information.
Step 4: Verify Coverage Before Your Appointment
Work through this before treatment is scheduled:
✓ Confirm your MassHealth coverage is active today, not just that you are enrolled
✓ Confirm the dental office participates in your specific coverage type
✓ Ask whether the service you need is covered for your type and age
✓ Ask whether prior authorization is required, and how long approval usually takes
✓ Ask how much of your yearly benefit limit remains, if you are 21 or over
✓ Ask what your out-of-pocket responsibility would be, and get it in writing
Verifying in advance prevents most billing surprises, but it does not guarantee payment. Benefits are checked per visit and claims are reviewed after treatment, so an estimate stays an estimate. Bring your card every time. Our insurance and benefit verification information page explains what we check and when.
Step 5: Understand the 2026 MassHealth Dental Benefit Changes
This is the change that matters most this year. Effective August 1, 2026, members age 21 and older who are not Department of Developmental Services clients have a $1,750 limit on covered dental benefits per benefit year.
Benefit year dates. The first benefit year runs August 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. From July 1, 2027, each benefit year runs July 1 through June 30. That differs from the January reset most private plans use, so do not assume your balance refreshes in the new calendar year. Health Safety Net eligible services share one combined $1,750 limit rather than a separate one.
Who is exempt. Members under 21 and adults who are DDS clients are not subject to the limit. If that applies in your household, our dental care information for MassHealth DDS clients explains how the exemption works.
| What May Still Be Covered After the $1,750 Limit ● Certain emergency dental services ● Tooth extractions ● Denture repairs ● Anesthesia ● A first set of full dentures following tooth extractions Coverage requirements still apply to each. Treatment that began before August 1, 2026 may qualify for transitional coverage if completed by October 31, 2026. |
A separate 2026 change: DentaQuest now serves as the dental program’s third-party administrator, handling the provider network and the member customer service center. That changed who administers the program, not who is eligible or what is covered. The covered service categories stayed the same. What changed is the yearly dollar amount MassHealth pays toward them for adults.
Practically, sequencing matters now. If you need several procedures, ask your dentist what to do first within this benefit year and what can wait until July. Our page on MassHealth dental benefits for adults covers the services and limits in more detail.
Does MassHealth Cover Dentures, Partial Dentures, Implants, and Invisalign?
Full and partial dentures. These may be covered for eligible children and adults, subject to program rules, and generally require prior authorization. Repairs are covered too and remain payable after the yearly limit. Immediate dentures, the temporary set placed the same day teeth are removed, are generally not part of the adult benefit. The covered sequence is extractions, a healing period, then a denture fitted to the healed ridge.
Dental implants. MassHealth does not cover dental implants, and bridges are not part of the routine adult benefit either. For replacing missing teeth, dentures and partials are the covered options. If you want implants, plan on paying privately and ask for the cost in writing first.
Invisalign and orthodontics. Orthodontic coverage depends on eligibility and program rules. Treatment may be covered for members under 21 when medically necessary rather than cosmetic, with prior authorization, and it is not part of the routine adult benefit. Whether a specific appliance such as clear aligners is approved is decided through that authorization process, so verify coverage for your actual treatment rather than the brand name.
Root canals. Root canal treatment is covered for eligible members, subject to program rules, with one clear exception: third molars, meaning wisdom teeth. For those teeth, extraction is the covered route.
Step 6: Know What to Do If a Service Is Not Covered
Being told something is not covered is not the end of the conversation. Three things are worth doing.
Ask for a written estimate that separates the non-covered service from everything else.
Ask about clinically appropriate alternatives. There is often a covered option addressing the same problem differently, such as a denture where an implant is not covered, or an extraction where a root canal is excluded.
Call MassHealth Dental Customer Service at 1-866-616-2699 if a coverage decision is unclear or you think it is wrong.
If you do pay privately for a non-covered service, MassHealth rules require a written agreement signed in advance. Never agree verbally, and never after treatment has happened. Understand the charge and agree to it first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does MassHealth cover dental?
Yes. MassHealth is the Massachusetts Medicaid program and includes a dental benefit. What you are covered for depends on your coverage type, age, and program rules. Members under 21 have the broadest benefit, and MassHealth Limited covers emergency dental services only.
What will happen to MassHealth dental coverage in 2026?
From August 1, 2026, adults 21 and over who are not DDS clients have a $1,750 limit per benefit year. The first benefit year ends June 30, 2027, then runs July 1 through June 30. Covered service categories were not reduced. DentaQuest also became the program’s third-party administrator.
How do I know if my MassHealth covers dental?
Check your card and approval letters to identify your coverage type, then call MassHealth Dental Customer Service at 1-866-616-2699 to confirm benefits are active and what they include. A dental office can also verify it when you book, which is usually fastest.
How much is MassHealth dental insurance?
There is no separate dental premium. Dental is part of your MassHealth coverage, not a policy bought on top of it. Some MassHealth programs charge an income-based monthly premium for the overall coverage, not for dental specifically. Covered services generally cost the member little or nothing.
What is the MassHealth dental fee schedule?
It is the published list of dental procedure codes MassHealth covers and the rates it pays enrolled providers. It governs what the dentist is reimbursed, not what you pay. Useful for seeing which procedures are covered at all, but it will not tell you your out-of-pocket cost.
What does MassHealth not cover?
For adults, dental implants, bridges, routine orthodontics, and cosmetic treatment such as whitening are not covered. Immediate dentures are generally excluded, as are root canals on third molars. Services past the yearly limit are not covered unless they fall into the exempt group.
How to apply for MassHealth dental coverage?
There is no separate dental application. You apply for MassHealth, and dental benefits come with the coverage type you are approved for. Apply through the Massachusetts Health Connector or MassHealth directly, then confirm your coverage type, since that determines your dental benefit.
Does MassHealth pay for a root canal?
Root canal treatment is covered for eligible members, subject to program rules, with one exception: third molars, commonly called wisdom teeth. For those, extraction is the covered option. The tooth often needs a crown afterward, also covered but usually requiring prior authorization, so ask about both together.
Which dentists in Boston accept MassHealth?
Use the MassHealth provider directory or call MassHealth Dental Customer Service at 1-866-616-2699. Both cover the whole state, including Boston. Whichever city you search, confirm two things with the office: that it is enrolled with MassHealth, and that it is taking new MassHealth patients.
What benefits can I get with MassHealth?
Beyond dental, MassHealth can include medical visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and behavioral health, depending on your coverage type. Dental covers preventive, diagnostic, restorative, surgical, periodontal, and denture care for eligible members. What applies to you is set by your coverage type, age, and eligibility.
